I’m still loving “moody” by Royel Otis a lot, thus it remains at #1 for a second week, while sombr‘s “back to friends” holds at #2 for a second week after spending three weeks at #1. Twenty One Pilots and Djo move up one spot each to #s 3 and 4 with “The Contract” and “Basic Being Basic”. Entering the top 10 are “No Rain, No Flowers” by The Black Keys, jumping seven spots to #7, and “Scars” by my favorite Welsh artist Secret Postal Society, moving up a notch to #10.
Two songs make their debut on my chart this week, the first of which is “Today’s Song” by rock legends the Foo Fighters, entering at #29. In a note accompanying the single’s release, band frontman Dave Grohl stated it’s a tribute to former band members including recently fired drummer Josh Freese, founding drummer William Goldsmith, guitarist Franz Stahl and late drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died in 2022. The second debut is the quite lovely “Incomprehensible” by Brooklyn, New York-based indie folk band Big Thief. Formed in 2015, the band now consists of vocalist-guitarist Adrianne Lenker, guitarist Buck Meek and drummer James Krivchenia. (Founding bassist Max Oleartchik left the band in 2024.) The song is the lead single from their forthcoming sixth studio album Double Infinity, set for release on September 5th.

Good stuff, Jeff, and kudos to you for continuing to compile your top 30 list week after week! The song you highlighted in this post I most gravitate to is “Today’s Song” by Foo Fighters. While I had known of Foo Fighters for many years, I only started paying closer attention to them about 4 years ago after they had released their 10th studio album “Medicine at Midnight.” I’ve since really come to dig them. Dave Grohl also strikes me as a pretty down-to-earth type of artist whose fame hasn’t gotten to his head.

Thanks, Christian. I love compiling my list of favorite songs each week, something I’ve done on and off since my early teens. And thank you too for being one of the few who actually listen to some of the songs on my lists, and for commenting. I think about quitting blogging almost every week, and don’t know how much longer I’ll keep doing this. But it’s fellow bloggers like you who at least acknowledge what I do that helps me to persevere.

Thanks, Jeff. While I understand blogging can be at times a bit frustrating, I really hope you won’t quit!
I’m trying not to pay too much attention to metrics and reminding myself I’m doing all of this first and foremost because I love music and writing about the topic, not to “become famous.”
That said, I’d be disingenuous not to admit recognition feels good. As such, I’m not entirely immune to engagement stats either.
At the end of the day, blogging needs to work for each of us on our terms. It should be a source of joy, not add to all the craziness life can throw at us!
