Here’s Part 3 of my favorite songs for each year from 2000 through 2023. In 2003, Coldplay became my favorite band, along with Green Day, Incubus and Weezer, and that lasted for about 10 years until they were replaced by Foster the People for a brief period. In 2015, twenty øne piløts became my favorite act, and in the years since, MISSIO, Foals, Lord Huron, Two Feet and, most recently, Beach Weather have been my favorites. I’ve written in varying detail about all of these songs in previous posts over my eight-plus years of blogging, so won’t write narratives about any of them here. Just the year, the song and the artist, and the best video I could find for each one.
2000 BENT – matchbox twenty
2001 FAMILY AFFAIR – Mary J. Blige
2002 LOSE YOURSELF – Eminem
2003 CLOCKS – Coldplay (my #1 song of the 2000s)
2004 THE REASON – Hoobastank
2005 BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS – Green Day
2006 SEXYBACK – Justin Timberlake featuring Timbaland
2007 THE PRETENDER – Foo Fighters
2008 VIVA LA VIDA – Coldplay
2009 LOVE HURTS – Incubus
2010 NEED YOU NOW – Lady Antebellum
2011 ROLLING IN THE DEEP – Adele (my #1 song of the 2010s)
2012 SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW – Gotye featuring Kimbra
2013 SWEATER WEATHER – The Neighbourhood
2014 LOVE ME AGAIN – John Newman
2015 TEAR IN MY HEART – twenty øne piløts
2016 STRESSED OUT – twenty øne piløts
2017 FEEL IT STILL – Portugal. The Man
2018 BROKEN – lovelytheband
2019 I SEE YOU – MISSIO
2020 BLINDING LIGHTS – The Weeknd
2021 FIRE – Two Feet
2022 AS IT WAS – Harry Styles
2023 TROUBLE WITH THIS BED – Beach Weather
Once again, a great list! It’s funny how many songs from the early 2000s I still think of as “new”!

Thanks Marc. And I agree that time seems to race by faster and faster with every passing year!

As your lists get to the more recent years I find I don’t know as many of the artists! Adele, I certainly would have know but it was you Jeff who introduced me to Cold Play at the concert in the Rose Bowl Stadium (?) That was a wild and wonderful concert. Then you also introduced me to 21 Pilots who I know also just love! Thanks for you love of music that you have introduced me to ( many artists but not all of them)! 🙂

While there are significantly less songs I recognized compared to the first two installments, of the ones I know, I like most.
If I could only pick one song from 2023, it would be Cordovas’ “Falling Angels of Rock ‘n’ Roll”. For 2022, I’d go with Dawes’ “Ghost of the Machine”. Last but not least, for 2021, I would pick Lord Huron’s “Mine Forever”.

Each of us likes what we like, and songs resonate with us for wide-ranging reasons. “Mine Forever” is my second-favorite song of 2021.

You’re absolutely right, Jeff. And, as I’ve said before, I like the fact that we dig different music. Otherwise, we’d all be writing about the same stuff, which at some point would become boring!
Coincidentally, I came across “Mine Forever” again the other day – such a great-sounding song! I would include it in my next “Sunday Six” feature, except I already did in a previous installment! 🙂

I too love so many of these tracks. We have such similar tastes, though I think my tastes run a bit darker and aggro at times. Otherwise, you have absolutely perfect taste (lol). Thanks, Jeff!

That makes me happy Rann! While your tastes do run a bit darker than mine, I love most of the music you write about too.

In 2009, I watched a lot of MTV because I was hoping they’d play Justin Bieber’s music videos for “One Time” and “One Less Lonely Girl” eventually. There was some kind of phone commercial to like vote for your favorite song or something and “Need You Now” was one of the choices. Man, I miss those days!

I agree with Marc. I can’t believe “Feel It Still” is from 2017. Almost 7 years ago? Really? Time flies…
Great list, by the way =)

So many great songs. I love “feel it still” and the JT song. I bought my daughter The Neighbourhood’s debut album for Christmas…on vinyl. She loves them.

I very much enjoyed your journey through the decades. So many great songs. On this segment I adore Need You Now by Lady Antebellum. One of my favourite country ballads, if not, songs of all time.
