Top 30 Songs for September 17-23, 2023

The wonderfully trippy and boisterous “Overrated” by Canadian artist dwi holds the top spot for a second week on my latest Top 30 chart. Sliding into second place is the enchanting love song “Kisses” by British indie dream pop band Slowdive. Songs by two of my favorite acts – “Walk Through the Fire” by Virginia-based singer-songwriter The Frontier, and “Good Vibrations” by Texas-based duo MISSIO – both climb four spots to #5 and #6, respectively. Moving up five spots and entering the top 10 are “Dial Drunk” by Vermont-based singer-songwriter Noah Kahan, at #8, and “Odyssey”, a breezy collaboration between French alt-rock band Phoenix and American singer-songwriter Beck, at #9. “Dial Drunk” has become a huge breakout hit for Kahan, and his version of the song with guest vocals by Post Malone, is currently #1 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay and Adult Alternative Airplay charts.

Three songs make their debut this week: “Under You” by the mighty Foo Fighters, at #28, the sultry love song “My Kinda Girl” by British collective The 23s (which I recently reviewed), at #29, and the sweet love song “Darling” by Canadian artist Western Jaguar, from his wonderful album Oblivion (which I also reviewed), at #30.

    1. I can’t believe you ignored Foo Fighters for so long Christian, though truth be told, I pretty much ignored them too – along with many other rock & alternative bands – until my musical reawakening in 2013, when I finally pulled my narrow-minded head out of my ass!

      2. Ironically, you won’t need to expend much effort to stay caught up with my posts going forward, as I’ve decided to quit writing reviews for a while. I’ll still post my weekly top 30 lists, and may post an occasional article from time to time.

      3. The one big difference is that you’re writing about what you want to write about, which is not always the case for me. Some of the music I write about is of my own choosing, because I really like it or the musicians/bands making it, but some I do as a favor to the artists or bands. To make matters worse, I really don’t enjoy writing, which is a big problem for a blogger!

Yes you have me there Jeff. I never have posted a song that I don’t like…ever.
Yes. not enjoying writing is not a great thing to feel.
Well I’m happy you are going to continue in at least some way for right now.

I totally get it too. I try to write about songs I like only and even then it feels like a chore from time to time (having to write email responses stating why I don’t want to write about the song they sent me is particularly draining). It shouldn’t feel like a job, specially when you are not getting paid a salary either.

I don’t respond nowadays unless the sender sends me a follow-up. I respond them just to prevent them from pestering me about it. I would ignore them as well but very often the email comes from PR folks who from time to time do send me tracks that I like. But yeah, it does feel like an unpaid job.
