100 Best Indie Songs of 2025

At the end of each year, I publish a list of my Top 100 Songs, representing my picks for what I think are the best songs – my favorites actually – for the entire year. Last year, at the suggestion of a member of Missouri folk rock band Voodoo Planet, I also compiled a list of my 100 favorite indie songs of 2024. That blog post nearly went viral, and over the past year has amassed over 7,000 views to become my 10th most popular post ever. (In sharp contrast, my 100 Best Songs of 2024 post has garnered only around 1,100 views.)

Because I follow, and am followed by, many indie musicians and bands on social media, I enjoy showcasing some of the exceptional music being made by them that’s every bit as good as, or even better than, that from mainstream acts, so compiling a separate list of what I think are the best indie songs makes perfect sense.

These are not necessarily “indie” songs in terms of genre (though there are many that fall into that overall category), rather songs by independent or DIY music acts. While some are in fact signed to music labels, they’re usually small or independently owned. There are 82 acts represented in this list, the majority of which are from the U.S., Canada and the U.K., but also from Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Germany and Ukraine. A number of acts have two songs, while English psychedelic alt-rock band Future Theory have three.

Of course, I must make note of the fact that this list contains only songs I’m aware of, and that there are likely hundreds of other great songs that deserve to be here, except that I’ve never heard them. The songs on this list – all of which are outstanding if I do say so myself – were generally released between November 2024 and October 2025.

Though they’re ranked from #1 to 100, it doesn’t necessarily mean that a song at #30 is better than one at #60. That said, the ones closer to the top are my very favorites. And though I’d love to write a narrative about each song and artist, given my limited time and energy, not to mention people’s short attention spans, I’ve decided against that again this year. I will, however, include the marvelous video for my #1 pick, “The Faithful Heart” by immensely talented and creative L.A.-based artist Wons Phreely, as it’s so delightful that everyone should watch it! Fresh New Tracks, Vol. 49 – Blake Rascals, Future Theory, Icarus Phoenix, Shimmer Road

For the latest installment of my Fresh New Tracks series, I’m featuring new songs by an international array of acts. They are, in alphabetical order, Italian indie garage rock band Blake Rascals, English alt-rock band Future Theory, American shoegaze/indie rock band Icarus Phoenix, and Canadian Country collaborative Shimmer Road.

Blake Rascals – “Conspiracy Of Snakes”

Hailing from Ancona province in central Italy are Blake Rascals, an indie garage rock trio formed early this year. With a name inspired by their shared love for British poet and painter William Blake, who often used the image of a snake to represent the complexity of the human soul, its temptations and its rebellions, their sound is a distinctive blend of British indie rock and garage / post-punk revival influences by such acts as Arctic Monkeys, Queens of the Stone Age, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Raconteurs. The band is comprised of Giuseppe Palumbo (vocals and guitar), Andrea Marcellini (bass and backing vocals) and Simone Raggetti (drums and backing vocals). Andrea previously released music under his solo acoustic folk music project Andy K Leland, and I featured him numerous times on this blog between 2017-2019.

On June 10th, Blake Rascals released their debut single “Conspiracy Of Snakes“, and it’s a glorious hard-charging banger! The song opens with a powerful stomping drumbeat which is soon joined by heavy bass and a sensuous reverby guitar riff, then explodes into a maelstrom of distorted guitars and thunderous percussion, creating an electrifying soundscape for Giuseppe’s commanding vocals. And just when we think the guys have taken things as far as they can, they let loose with a furious onslaught of raging guitars and pummeling rhythms at the end for an exhilarating finish. I love it!

Future Theory – “Reality Buzz”

A long-time favorite British music act of mine is alternative psychedelic rock band Future Theory, a Lincolnshire, England-based four-piece comprised of Max Sander (rhythm guitar and vocals), Chris Moore (lead guitar), Jacob Brookes (bass) and Rohan Parrett (drums). Blending elements of alternative and progressive rock, psychedelia, grunge, shoegaze and funk, they create arresting songs featuring complex melodies and arrangements, and delivered with lavish instrumentation and Max’s mesmerizing vocals. Since first learning about them in early 2017, I’ve been consistently impressed by their intelligent songwriting and strong musicianship, and have written about them and their outstanding music numerous times. Their single “One and the Same” reached #3 on my Top 30 chart and ranks #42 on my 100 Best Songs of 2022 list, while their gorgeous “Why” went all the way to #1 and ranks #18 on my 100 Best Songs of 2023.

Now this talented band is back with “Reality Buzz“, their first new single since “Skin” in December 2023, and it was worth the wait! The song grabbed my attention right away with its swirling psychedelic guitars, Max’s distinctive sultry vocals and infectious head-bopping groove propelled by an insistent drumbeat. As the track progresses, we’re treated to more of Chris and Max’s awe-inspiring guitar prowess as they lay down a barrage of scorching riffs, fortified by Jacob’s grinding bass and Rohan’s boisterous drums. Future Theory never fail to deliver a quality song, and “Reality Buzz” instantly ranks among my favorite songs by them.

Icarus Phoenix – “Mark & Kyle”

The wonderfully-named Icarus Phoenix is a shoegaze/indie rock band originally formed in Missoula, Montana in 2020, but now based in and around Baltimore, Maryland. Fronted by silky-voiced singer-songwriter and guitarist Drew Danburry (who’s independently released a staggering amount of solo music since 2002, including over 400 songs on over 20 albums and 13 EPs), Icarus Phoenix has released quite a bit of music as well, starting with their self-titled debut album in 2021, followed by two more albums that year, another in 2022 and their most recent, I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said, last August (2024). In Nov 2022, Drew recorded 40 songs in three days at June Audio in Provo, Utah with producer Jed Jones (Post malone, The Killers), also recruiting the help of longtime friends Jake Bellows of the band Neva Dinova to play additional guitar, Justin Pacheco on bass, and Icarus Phoenix bandmate Andrew Young on drums. Since the release of I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said, Icarus Phoenix has been dropping singles at a rate of one every three weeks, many of which will be included on a deluxe edition of their aforementioned album, to be released next month. In March I wrote about their gorgeous song “Poor Sad Indie Everything”, which recently spent 15 weeks on my Top 30 chart, three of them at #10.

Their latest offering is “Mark & Kyle“, a heartwarming song about his English friend Mark who adopted a young boy named Kyle. Drew explains: “Mark has been a long time friend for twenty years at least. He’s always wanted to be a parent. Dreams come true. Sometimes those dreams are difficult and wonderful. It’s all part of the process of life I guess.” I love the song’s breezy melody, chiming guitars and what sounds like a mellotron. And it goes without saying I also love Drew’s warm vocals as he sings the poignant lyrics “When Kyle first met Mark and called him “Dad” he coulda cried. Adopting someone changes more than one life, if its right. So they play hide & seek to find their feet and then they dodge the cracks so they don’t fall in.” Kyle created the sweet artwork for the single.

Shimmer Road – “Branson”

Shimmer Road is a collaborate country music project fronted by the enormously talented and versatile singer-songwriter and musician Shimmer Johnson. Born and raised in Edmonton, Canada where she still resides, Shimmer also spent her teenage years in Branson, Missouri, as well as some time as an adult in Los Angeles. She began her music career singing country songs, but eventually branched out into adult contemporary pop, rock and even dance music, all of which she handles with ease. She’s recorded music both as a solo artist and in collaboration with numerous other songwriters and producers from around the globe, creating a truly impressive repertoire of outstanding songs. I’ve featured her numerous times on this blog over the past seven years, and two of her songs, the terrific 2021 dance single “Starts With You” and “Essence”, a stunning 2023 collaboration with Danish composer and producer Refeci, have reached #1 on my Top 30 chart, the latter also ranking #7 on my 100 Best Songs of 2023 list.

The prolific artist must be running on some kind of bionic energy force, as today she drops not one but two new singles – an enthralling collaboration “All I Need to Know” with Dutch producer and songwriter Plux, and “Branson” with her country band Shimmer Road. And this is on the heels of another single she released only a week ago! I’ve chosen to feature “Branson”, as I rarely write about country music. Co-written with her husband Corey, the song is a lovely autobiographical ode to the Missouri town where she spent her formative years. Shimmer explains: “This is about my life in Branson throughout my teenage years and how it will always be my home no matter where life takes me.” In addition to Shimmer on vocals and Corey on bass and keyboards, Shimmer Road also includes Jay Road on drums, Alan Tymofichuk on guitar and Ryan Williams on steel guitar. It’s a beautiful song that has a more traditional country vibe, which in addition to Shimmer’s captivating vocals is why I find it so appealing.

Top 30 Songs for August 18-24, 2024

I’m still enthralled with Fontaines D.C.‘s bombastic and unsettling masterpiece “Starburster”, consequently it remains at #1 on my Top 30 chart for a third week. twenty one pilots and Beach Weather hold the #2 and #3 spots again this week with their beautiful songs “The Craving” and “High in Low Places”, while “Panoramic View” by AWOLNATION moves back up to #4. Norwegian psych-noir duo Mayflower Madame‘s darkwave gem “A Foretold Ecstasy” moves up two spots to #5 and The Decemberists move up a notch to enter the top 10 with their delightful Latin-esque “Oh No!”

Two songs, both of which have been out for a while, finally enter my chart this week. At #29 is the enchanting “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” by Billie Eilish, giving her two songs on this chart, the other being “LUNCH”, which currently sits at #6. Both songs are from her latest album HIT ME HARD AND SOFT.

Coming in at #30 is “Good Luck, Babe!” by Missouri-born and now L.A.-based singer-songwriter sensation Chappell Roan. With her campy music aesthetic and performing style heavily influenced by drag queens, she’s recently gone viral, and I’ve happily climbed aboard the Chappell Roan bandwagon! Her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, released in September 2023, was not an immediate commercial success despite being included on several best albums of 2023 lists. But following her run as an opening act for Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts World Tour, which ran from February-April 2024, and performances at music festivals like Coachella, Governors Ball and Lollapalooza, where she allegedly broke the record for the most crowded set at that festival’s history, Roan and her album eventually garnered a cult following. By mid-2024, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess had climbed numerous worldwide charts, reaching #1 in Ireland, New Zealand and the UK, and the top five in Australia and on the US Billboard 200 Album chart. Subsequently, several of the album’s singles entered various charts for the first time since their release, along with her follow-up single “Good Luck, Babe!”, which reached the top 10 in many countries, making it her most successful single to date.

Top 30 Songs for August 11-17, 2024

Last week’s top seven songs remain in the top seven this week, with the irrepressible Fontaines D.C. holding on to the top spot for a second week with their darkly beautiful and bombastic tour de force “Starburster”. twenty one pilots and Beach Weather switch places, with the former’s “The Craving” moving into the #2 spot. Entering the top 10 are “Like You Do” by a long-time favorite of mine, Virginia-based singer-songwriter The Frontier, and “Lost In Space” by another long-time favorite band Foster the People. Fun fact: I’ve seen twenty one pilots, Beach Weather and Foster the People in concert.

“Oh No!” by The Decemberists jumps eight spots to #11, making it the biggest upward mover for a second week. Two songs make their debut, the first of which is “Messy”, a defiant song of self affirmation by English singer-songwriter and musician Lola Young. I heard the song on a recent post by fellow blogger Katie Hartless on her wonderful blog Yard Sale of Thoughts, and loved it at first listen. Though Lola Young has been recording and releasing music for the past five years, I wasn’t familiar with her or her music. Her provocative songwriting and smoky vocal style have earned her comparisons with the late Amy Winehouse. “Messy” is from her third album This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway, which dropped June 21st. The second debut, entering at #30, is “downing street” by innovative London-based alt-rock band Brain Ape, who I’ve featured many times on this blog. I reviewed the song when it came out last month.

Top 30 Songs for August 4-10, 2024

Irish alt-rock band Fontaines D.C. are one of the most exciting and interesting acts making music today, and I love their always arresting sound, thanks in part to charismatic lead vocalist Grian Chatten’s distinctive baritone Irish brogue. Formed in Dublin in 2017 and now based in London, in addition to Chatten, the band is comprised of Carlos O’Connell (guitar), Conor Curley (guitar), Conor Deegan III (bass), and Tom Coll (drums). They’ve released three critically acclaimed albums since 2018 (none of which have charted on the Billboard 200 Album chart, which is a travesty), with a fourth, Romance, due for release on August 23.

“Starburster”, the bombastic lead single from Romance, rises to the pinnacle of my Top 30 chart this week. It’s one of the most sonically thrilling and complex songs I’ve heard in a while, and I could listen to it on an endless loop. It’s become their highest-charting single in the U.S. thus far and, shockingly, their first to ever make the UK and Canadian singles charts.

The song was inspired by a panic attack that Chatten suffered in London’s St Pancras tube station, and the jarring gasps heard at the end of each line suggest the gasps or quick breaths of someone experiencing a panic attack. To drive home their message, Fontaines D.C. start with a foreboding Mellotron string loop quickly followed by an elegant piano riff before the music explodes into a bombastic soundscape of stomping trip hop beats, sharp percussion and reverb-soaked twangy guitars. Chatten does a fine job with his commanding rapid-fire rapping of the lyrics, which he’d previously done on the collaborative single “Better Way To Live” with Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap. The song transitions to a calm interlude in the bridge with a majestic string arrangement and Chatten’s vocals now a warm and soothing croon, then finishes with a return of the stomping beats and jarring music. I love it!

The song’s rather unsettling video, directed by Aube Pierre, features Chatten performing a variety of daily activities in differing personas ranging from angelic to demonic, sometimes wounded and other times wearing a mask or wig. It’s as ambiguous and scattered as the song’s lyrics.

In other notable chart developments, Billie Eilish‘s “LUNCH” enters the top 10 at #9, and The Decemberists‘ “Oh No!” leaps nine spots to #19, making it the biggest upward mover this week. Three newish songs make their debut this week, starting with “Stargazing” by English singer-songwriter Myles Smith, entering at #28. He wrote the song along with Jesse Fink and Peter Fenn after being inspired while watching a sunset together in Malibu. The song has become his biggest hit yet, and first to chart in the U.S. Next up is “Baby Blue Movie” by Texas dream pop band Cigarettes After Sex. Released on June 4th, the captivating ethereal song was the third single from their recently-released third studio album X’s. The third new entry is the sensuous “Honey” by Welsh art pop artist Mr Bewlay, which I reviewed in late June. This is the first appearance on my chart for all three acts.

Beach Weather remain at #1 for a third week with their gorgeous and cinematic Spaghetti Western-esque “High in Low Places”, which I love more with every listen. Nine days ago, they released their latest and appropriately-titled single “Hottest Summer on Record”, which is guaranteed to appear on my chart in the coming weeks. Pearl Jam‘s “Wreckage” holds at #2 for a second week, while “Starburster”, by the always remarkable Fontaines D.C. moves up two spots to #3. I love this song, and can’t get enough of its contrasting bombastic and melodic brooding vibe. twenty one pilots‘ poignant “The Craving” also advances two spots, to #4, while “Lost In Space” by Foster the People is this week’s biggest upward mover, jumping six spots to #15.

Three songs make their debut this week, the first of which is the wonderful Latin-flavored “Oh No!” by The Decemberists, entering at #28. Along with “Burial Ground”, which spent two weeks at #1 and now sits at #21, the esteemed band currently has two songs on this chart. Both are from their excellent latest album As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again. Next up is “You Just Played My Mind” by English singer-songwriter Oli Barton, which I reviewed upon its release on June 21. This is his sixth song to appear on my chart over the past seven years. Entering at #30 is “War” by English alt-rock band Healer, which also came out on June 21st, and which I also reviewed. This is their second song to appear on my chart, their first being last year’s “Bones”.

Top 30 Songs for July 21-27, 2024

Some of you who read my blog or this post may wonder what my weekly Top 30 lists represent or how they’re compiled. They’re essentially lists of my favorite songs for a given week, my own personal Top 30 that I would focus on were I the program manager of my own radio station.

There’s so much great music out now that I could have included 40 songs on this week’s Top 30. And all the songs in this week’s top six could easily be #1 (two of them already have). The sultry “High in Low Places” by Beach Weather remains on top for a second week, while Pearl Jam‘s gorgeous song “Wreckage” moves up a notch to #2. I love Glass Animals‘ “Creatures in Heaven”, AWOLNATION‘s “Panoramic View” and Fontaines D.C.’s “Starburster” so much, as well as “The Craving”, which reinforces yet again why twenty one pilots continue to be one of my favorite music acts of all time.

Entering the top 10 this week are “On the Game” by The Black Keys and “A Foretold Ecstasy” by Norwegian psych-noir band Mayflower Madame. The one debut is “Waking Life” by Nicholas a. Milillo featuring Dee Wolf, Bobby Jasso, Gabrielle Marella and the voice of Tony Milillo. I reviewed the dramatic song when it came out four weeks ago.

Top 30 Songs for July 14-20, 2024

On the strength of their infectious melodies, ace musicianship, strong charisma, and lead singer Nick Santino’s beautiful vocals, pop-rock trio Beach Weather have become one of my top favorite bands. In fact, a photo I took of them at a concert last year graces the header of my X (formerly Twitter) page. In addition to Santino, the band includes Reeve Powers on bass and Sean Silverman on guitar. I’ve loved every one of their songs, and their latest single “High In Low Places” becomes their fourth to top my weekly Top 30 chart (the previous three are “Sex, Drugs, Etc.”, “Trouble With This Bed” and “Pineapple Sunrise”.

The song has a brooding cinematic vibe in the vein of Ennio Morricone that would make it a great addition to the soundtrack of a Spaghetti Western film, and I love the twangy guitars and Santino’s sensuous vocals. He had this to say about the song: “We like to call ‘High in Low Places’ our apocalyptic love song. There was beauty in the idea of finding peace in one another while the world was slowly melting. We wanted to create something that felt cinematic, the closing credits of a modern end-of-times western. There are hints of those influences in the guitars and strings running through the chorus where we want to pull everyone into a world but stay hopeful that we can all rise above that insanity transpiring around us.” The lyrics speak to remaining positive and optimistic in the face of life’s problems and obstacles: “You and I got some troubles we’re facing, I know we can make it staying high in low places. Never mind all the tears that we wasted, I know we can make it staying high in low places.”

The video, which was shot in the Arizona desert outside Phoenix, involved the guys getting stuck by cholla cactus and other hazards that come from being in a beautiful but hostile environment – one I’m intimately familiar with living in the Coachella Valley.

In other chart happenings of note, “The Craving” by twenty one pilots moves up five to enter the top 10 at #10, and “Foretold Ecstasy” by the wonderfully-named Norwegian psych-noir band Mayflower Madame advances four spots to #14. Two songs make their debut this week. Entering at #29 is “Rainbow”, by another favorite band of mine, Nashville-based Cage the Elephant, whose previous single “Neon Pill” was a huge #1 hit on all the Alternative charts, as well as my personal Top 30. And coming in at #30 is the rousing garage rock gem “Just Wanna Sleep” by Iowa indie rock band Halfloves, which I reviewed last month.

Top 30 Songs for July 7-13, 2024

It’s another great week for music, and Glass Animals remain on top for a second week with their beautiful song “Creatures in Heaven”. Beach Weather slide into the second spot with their smoldering summer hit “High In Low Places”, while Pearl Jam‘s “Wreckage” moves up a spot to #3. I really love this song, which has become my favorite Pearl Jam song ever. Hozier‘s “Too Sweet”, which has become the biggest hit of his career, is currently #1 on the Billboard Rock/Alternative Airplay, Alternative Airplay and AAA (Adult Alternative Airplay) charts, having spent nine consecutive weeks and counting on the latter. The song spent two weeks at #1 and four weeks at #2 on my chart, and now sits at #4. “End of Beginning” by Djo enters the top 10, and “The Craving” by twenty one pilots jumps 10 spots to #15, making it the biggest upward mover this week.

Debuting this week are two marvelous songs by artists who make their first appearance on my chart. The first is “Payback” by L.A.-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Aaron Frazer. It’s funny, not funny how often we come across artists or bands in passing, but sadly not pay close enough attention at the time for things to fully register. Though he’s been making music for more than a decade, first as a member of contemporary R&B and soul revival group Durand Jones & The Indications, and also more recently as a solo artist, I didn’t become fully cognizant of the immensely talented falsetto-voiced Mr. Frazer until seeing “Payback” moving up the Billboard AAA chart, as well as reading about him in a post by fellow blogger Christian’s Music Musings. In doing a bit of searching about Durand Jones & The Indications, I saw they were the ones who sang the wonderful song “Witchoo”, which reached #22 on the AAA chart in 2021. I’ve always loved male singers with tenor and falsetto voices, so Frazer’s vocal style is right up my alley. “Payback”, from his terrific second album Into The Blue, has an irresistible retro 60s soul vibe that calls to mind some of the great soul acts like Marvin Gaye, the Temptations and The Capitols (who had a hit with “Cool Jerk”), but with a modern edge.

The second debut, entering at #30, is the Latin-tinged “Espresso” by American singer and actress Sabrina Carpenter. After appearing in various TV and films, she gained recognition for her role in the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World that aired from 2014–2017. She’s released five albums since 2014, the last of which, her 2022 release Emails I Can’t Send, was successful, reaching #23 on the Billboard Hot 200 Album chart. “Espresso” was the lead single from her forthcoming sixth album Short n’ Sweet, due for release August 23rd. Her follow up single “Please Please Please” reached #1 on the Hot 100 last week, but I like “Espresso” more.
