SILENT MASS – Single Review: “The Great Chaos”

Today I’m pleased to present Silent Mass, an ethereal goth band based in Brooklyn, New York. Silent Mass originally began as a solo act in Los Angeles by singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and music photographer Ammo Bankoff. Her debut single “Total Recall”, a cover of the song by English 80s post-punk band The Sound, was released in 2020 by L.A.-based record label Dune Altar as part of the charity compilation album Do You Feel That Way Too? A Tribute to Adrian Borland & The Sound (Adrian Borland, the frontman of The Sound who suffered from schizoaffective disorder and severe depression, committed suicide in 1999). Shortly afterward, Bankoff teamed up with audio engineer and guitarist Robert Duncan, and the two of them relocated to New York, where they were soon joined by drummer and producer Alex Posell, turning Silent Mass into a three-piece band.

Their music is a captivating blend of post-punk, ethereal wave, shoegaze, goth and 90s alternative, influenced by such acts as The Cranberries, Chelsea Wolfe, Cranes, Beach House, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance and Enya. They liken their sound to “chilling in a misty vale, listening to Enya, sipping red wine, while a raven in the distance caws your name.” After listening to their songs, I say that sounds about right!

They released their debut single “Rose + Crown” in June 2021, which they followed that December with “A Cold War City”. After a two-year lull, they started releasing singles again this past March, beginning with “Land of Heart’s Desire”, followed a month later with “Nest of Flowers”. Today they drop “The Great Chaos“, the third and title track from their forthcoming debut album The Great Chaos, due for release on June 20th, which also happens to be the Summer Solstice.

Written by Bankoff, the track was mixed by Robert Duncan IV at Mourning Sun Records and mastered by Allene Norton. About “The Great Chaos”, Bankoff states it “finds beauty in the spiral of self-discovery. It’s a love song about mourning a version of your past self.” Musically, the song is moody and dark yet strangely beautiful, with haunting and lush orchestral synths overlain by an arresting combination of gorgeous chiming and shimmery guitar notes, accompanied by enchanting tribal drumbeats that add wonderful texture to the track. Bankoff’s ethereal droning vocals accentuate the track’s overall mysterious vibe as she ponders “Can you find a way out? Can you find a way out of this nightmare?” It’s a marvelous song.

SIVAN LEVY – EP Review: “SIDE:W”

Sivan Levy is a multi-faceted Queer Israeli artist currently based in Tel Aviv, who’s not only a talented singer-songwriter and musician, but also a successful actress and filmmaker. She’s starred in several highly acclaimed films and television series, earning multiple awards for her exceptional work. Her latest film, My Daughter My Love, written and directed by Eitan Green, premiered last summer at the prestigious Jerusalem Film Festival. Also last summer, in June, Levy released a beautiful EP side:s, her first music release since her self-titled three-song EP in 2015. The EP features six captivating tracks written and sung by her, one of which, “Jacaranda”, received a special live performance that was captured in a lovely video. Levy released that video last August, which I featured on this blog (you can read my article about it here). 

Now Levy returns with a new EP side:w (‘w’ is for winter, whereas the ‘s’ in her previous EP side:s represented summer). Continuing the journey that began with side:s, side:w takes us on an emotional rollercoaster through the human psyche with introspective songs exploring relationships, love and loss, and emotional well-being, served up with dreamy and often dramatic instrumentals and Levy’s arresting ethereal vocals. Like side:s, side:w was recorded and co-produced by Levy and Yoav Rosenthal, who also played guitar and bass, handled programming, and sang backing vocals. Levy played piano and keyboards, Giori Politi played drums, percussion, and programmed beats, Maya Belsitzman played cello, and Yael Enosh played additional synths. Mixing was done by Nicolas Vernhes.

The EP opens with “Forgot“, a haunting song mourning the dissipation of a once-torrid love affair. Starting off with rather unsettling scraping sounds accompanied by a gentle pounding drumbeat, the music gradually expands into a mysterious, darkly beautiful soundscape, whereupon Levy softly laments of her memories of what it felt like to be in love, feelings she no longer shares: “I got used to breathing on my neck. To the warmness that caresses all night long. To mornings full of joy or fight or silence. My love had faded through the years, and I forgot, oh, everything. I’m just a rock inside a sea, that’s waiting floods to be.” The piano and cello are particularly affecting and along with the airy synths, create a gorgeous backdrop for Levy’s enchanting breathy vocals. By song’s end, Levy asks whether life is worth living without love: “And there’s no one in my mind. And I’m in no one’s mind. Am I alive when I’m not loved? When I can’t love no more.

On the equally haunting and cinematic “Kick Off“, Levy sings of not allowing fears and self-doubt to keep you from living your life to the fullest: “I will not run I won’t get scared. I will stay here and I’ll breathe / Kick-off that voice in your head that just judge and judge and judge and judge and suddenly, you’ll see how the green is greener. How the blue is bluer.” The lovely video utilizes AI-generated imagery to great effect.

The captivating “My Far Away Femme” seems to touch on a brief romantic encounter, and how the other person’s idealized image and adoration of you is not based in reality – a sentiment I’m afraid I’ve fallen victim of more than once: “My far-away femme. You see someone in your sleep, and you’re in love with her completely. She’s everything you’re dreaming. Your fantasy (does not exist). And this someone has my face and has my body. This someone has my eyes and has my voice. But this someone who’s so present in your head is so far away from being me. Your fantasy (does not exist).”

When the Winter’s Coming In” is an achingly beautiful and emotionally powerful song, and I may be way off, but my take on its meaning is that it seems to be about coming to terms with one’s eventual passing from this earth, with winter a metaphor for the end of life. There is no despair, only acceptance and a hope of being reborn in another life. Levy’s vocals are appropriately chilling as she plaintively sings “When the winter’s coming in, no, I will not miss so much. Everything that’ll never be, I will be enough. Wild sky. Smoking velvet, brutal pink. Pure me up and bare me down. Rebirth me, please.

On the melancholy “Steams“, she remorsefully sings of a love affair that now appears to be broken beyond repair, and my guess is that steam signifies feelings of suffocation in a toxic relationship: “The air got thicker in the room. The steams have nowhere to get clear / I didn’t think we’d dare to leave the maze we’ve built in so much pain. You were so brave to rip the chords and breathe me into air. Our eyes are empty. There’s nothing left of us. Everything is, Everything is over now.” And on the captivating closing track “Silent Legs“, Levy sings of searching for solace in the tempest of life, and our tendency to want to wall ourselves off in order to avoid being hurt and subjected to pain: “Now you’ve found how to build that wall around you, you can’t get hurt, you can’t get hurt anymore. Silent legs, silent eyes. Your heart made too much noise.” The mournful cello and atmospheric synths create a doleful but lovely backdrop for Levy’s haunting, emotive vocals.

side:w is an exquisite, brilliantly executed work of almost surreal beauty. With a run time of over 29 minutes, and such deeply impactful and breathtaking soundscapes and vocals that take us on an enthralling sonic journey, it feels more like a full album than an EP. Sivan Levy and company should be very proud of what they’ve created here.

A.WAKE – EP Review: “The Seed – Root Chakra Remix EP”

A.Wake (short for Anita Wake) is a fascinating and innovative singer-songwriter and musician based in Sheffield, England who’s been actively making music for several years, both as a member of several bands (in which she played bass and sang backing vocals) and more recently, as a solo artist. With a passionate interest in sound therapy, mysticism and the healing properties of music, she seeks to incorporate healing frequencies and modern music elements into her songs.

She released her enchanting debut single “Lemuria” last July, then followed in October with the darkly beautiful “Railings”, which I reviewed. Now she returns with her latest release The Seed – Root Chakra Remix EP, an unusual and interesting concept work featuring three different versions of her song “The Seed”, along with a shortened radio edit of the third remix.

Starting with the line “The seed of creation in you“, a quote by an angelic entity named Kryon, who’s been channeled through noted American author and medium Lee Carrol, A.Wake wrote the words “Stop wasting your life. Want what you do. Stop chasing the strife.” She then added these lines written by an unknown source and spoken by a man who’s also unknown: “If you only care enough for a result, you will almost certainly attain it. If you wish to be rich, you will be rich. If you wish to be learned, you will be learned. If you wish to be good, you will be good. All things are possible to him that believe it.” 

About the song and EP’s concept, she explains “‘The seed’ remixes are embedded with a root chakra balancing frequency, that can help you to stabilise your material world, earn money, find your life purpose, and feel grounded and connected to others. It should help you to stay focused and present.

The first remix, by fellow Sheffield electronic act The23s (who’s debut single “Never Be the Same” I reviewed in February), has an exotic Middle Eastern vibe that lends itself well to the song’s mystical subject matter. A.Wake’s bewitching array of hums, vocals and chants are simply captivating, backed by mysterious synths and ambient sounds of chirping birds layered over a languid pulsating groove.

The second remix, by DJ Steal, an electronic producer and composer also based in Sheffield, starts off with a delicate piano movement that seems to promise a gentle treatment of the song, but it’s soon joined by sharp percussive beats and industrial synths, taking the song into darker territory. A.Wake’s vocals sound more ethereal here, while the man’s vocals are more clear than in the previous remix.

The third remix, by LEen, another Sheffield-based electronic artist, is the longest of the three, running over seven and a half minutes. This remix features a hypnotic EDM beat, layered with a contrasting mix of airy and harsher industrial synths that very effectively create feelings of both euphoria and tension. A.Wake’s vocals are more enchanting than ever, soaring to great heights along with the music. I love a good dance groove, and though I like all three remixes, I think this one’s my favorite. I can definitely imagine myself getting lost to this in a dance club.

The fourth track is a high-voltage, four-minute long reimagining of the LEen remix, featuring some wonderful instrumental touches not found in the original. All in all, I must say that The Seed – Root Chakra Remix EP is a very enjoyable little collection of remixes!
