Top 30 Songs for September 5-11, 2021

I’m going to try something different for my Weekly Top 30 posts. Because they get little engagement, I’ll start providing a brief narrative introduction at the beginning to hopefully generate a bit more interest.

After Two Feet’s four-week-long reign at the top with his darkly smoldering “Devil”, Los Angeles alternative rock band The Neighbourhood take over the top spot with their dreamy love song “Stargazing”. Ever since the release of their gorgeous monster hit “Sweater Weather” in 2013 (which ranks at #4 on my list of 100 Best Songs of the 2010s), The Neighbourhood have been one of my favorite bands. I love just about every song they’ve released, and I’m happy to see them still flourishing after eight years. The sweet video shows the band as their alter-egos Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones, and features cameos by Lana Del Rey, Blake Griffin, Jaden Smith, Benny Blanco, Devon Carlson, Mac DeMarco and Alexa Demie.

Debuting on this week’s list are “NDA” by Billie Eilish and “Hush” by The Marías.

  2. While I do a weekly new music feature myself, I find much of contemporary music is a tough proposition for a guy who primarily is into the ’60s and ’70s. Luckily, this “yesterday man” finds there is some good new stuff out there that speaks to him.

    My absolute favorite from your list is Lord Huron. These guys just have such a great, cinematic sound, especially on that tune you picked. The Frontier tune sounds intriguing as well. I also like some of John Mayer’s songs, though this one doesn’t grab me as much.

    I salute you for highlighting contemporary music. Sometimes guys like myself should leave the comfortable ‘same old, same old’ behind. That’s in part what motivates me to do my “Best of What’s New” series. Though I’m not going to lie: Sometimes, I find it tough to find four new songs that sufficiently speak to me!

    1. Thanks for your comments Christian. I’m more than 10 years older than you, and grew up with 60s music, and I agree that a lot of the music that came out between 1965-72 is still the best ever recorded. That said, I don’t want to keep listening to music I love from the 60s, 70s and 80s over and over again, to the exclusion of newer stuff that came later. I’m glad I still find a lot of new music worth listening to, and that I can still get excited over a new song or artist.

      I have no use for my contemporaries who dismiss anything and everything after 1980 or some other imaginary date as being inferior or ‘crap’ music. Those people are ignorant, and are missing out on a lot of great music by artists like Lord Huron, The Neighbourhood and Sharon Van Etten.

    Hope the intro words generate more engagement for you. I think -and I could be totally wrong here– that the problem with weekly charts is that, most weeks, there will be little changes compared to the previous weeks, particularly near the top spots. Therefore, people might ignore the post because they already know most of its content.
    By the way, I’ve always been curious about how you decide the ranking each week. Is it gut feeling or you use some metrics like number of times you have played the song in a given time window or something else? Genuinely curious.

    1. You may be right, H.G.O., however, most weeks very few, if any, comment at all. I would think that a few more would comment on a particular song on my list that they like, but in all likelihood, most probably do not take the time to listen to a single song.

      As far as how I decide on my rankings, they’re generally based on my own feelings about each song and/or artist, but also influenced by the Billboard Alternative Airplay, Adult Alternative Airplay, and Hot 100 charts, mainly to see what current songs are popular or trending. There’s nothing scientific about it, just my own weekly top 30 that I’d love to play if I were the DJ of my own personal radio station.
