Sun Arcana

Sometimes you hear a song for the first time and it’s so gorgeous that you’re rendered speechless. After the British band Sun Arcana connected with me on Twitter, I listened to their song “Alone” and was immediately stunned by its haunting beauty and the passionate, soaring vocals of Tom Harper Ward. How, I wondered, could a young band such as this produce such incredible, emotionally charged music?  To say Sun Arcana is “awesome” or “amazing” would be a gross understatement. Listen to “Alone” and you’ll understand.

Sun Arcana consists of Tom Harper Ward (lead vocals, guitar and piano), Jules Wildblood (bass, backing vocals), Harry Acreman (guitar, backing vocals) and Ryan Daniels (drums). The band states that their sound is influenced by Muse, Radiohead, Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Foals, Royal Blood, Tame Impala and Everything Everything – all really great bands that I personally love – so it’s no surprise I would also love the richly textured music of Sun Arcana.

Their first single, “Take What You Need,” has an identifiable Royal Blood vibe, especially in the signature staccato guitar riffs. But this beautiful song is more complex, with multi-layered guitar, mesmerizing tonal shifts and soaring choruses.

Their stellar latest single “Nocturnal” has a decidedly more alternative rock sound, with crushing guitars and aggressive vocals. It starts out a bit like a Coldplay song, except with Ward’s powerful raspy vocals that call to mind those of Jared Leto and 30 Seconds to Mars. As the song progresses, Royal Blood can once again be heard as a strong influence, particularly in the formidable pulse-pounding guitar riffs that’ll give you goosebumps.
